An Alma Libre Summer: A Few Good Reads for the Beach

By Robert & Joanne M. Birce of Alma Libre

It’s that time of year again, time for us to close up Alma Libre Bookstore and head up north in search of a whole new crop of books for the next tourist season. Don’t worry though, we will be back. You can look for our doors to re-open in mid October with at least another 4,000 books to add to our stock of over 20,000 books now on our shelves.

While we are leaving for a while nothing else will change much in Puerto Morelos. The fish on the reef for example have no plans to go anywhere. They will be there waiting to be discovered by the next snorkeler or diver. In fact, summer is a great time to play in our ocean. Fewer tourists mean you will likely get the whole reef to yourself or there will be just you and your dive buddy on the boat.

The Botanical Garden in Puerto Morelos is a great place to visit on a quiet summer morning. More birds and animals will be hanging around with fewer humans about. You may even see a monkey or two.

The restaurants will still be serving their wonderful dishes and you will never have to wait in line. You can linger and enjoy the small-town ambiance. Our unique shops will be open and perhaps more bargains can be found.

The best part is that endless white sand beach will be all yours. Chances are you can walk or swim and play all day and not see another person.

In the mean time we have a few books that we recommend for your enjoyment during your summer hammock time.

dust jacket: The Maya
The Maya, Seventh Edition (Ancient Peoples and Places)
by Michael D. Coe

Just re-released and updated, this is one of Alma Libre Bookstore’s best selling books on the history of the Maya. It is an excellent overview of the Maya for those who don't want to read a pile of textbooks and it has hundreds of photographs. It contains excellent timelines, maps and descriptions of the cities as they were.

dust jacket: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera
by Isabel Alcantara, Sandra Egnolff

Frida Kahlo's stormy relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera and how it affected her work is the subject of this fascinating book. We especially like this book because it gives an excellent overview of her life with lots of colour photos of her art.
