Anat Kah is pleased to announce that we have made our first round of grants to community organizations in Puerto Aventuras! Thanks to generous donors from around the world, we are able to grant more than $11,000 USD to four local groups who have served the community in a variety of ways for years.
Each grantee submitted a comprehensive application for funds for specific activities, which included information about their past achievements, current needs and future plans. These applications were reviewed by the foundation, and decisions were made based on the merit of each submission. All grantees must submit a report at the end of the six-month grant period that describes the activities undertaken with the grant, the challenges they faced, and the goals that were met. The approved grants are the following:
- A grant was made to Transformar Educando A.C., the community educational center in the Poblado, for the purchase of three new industrial sewing machines for their sewing workshop. The program at Transformar Educando not only gives women instruction in the art of sewing, but also provides them with marketing and financial management education, as well as psychological and self-improvement programs and workshops to empower residents of Puerto Aventuras on many different levels.
- A grant was made to Friends of Puerto Aventuras (F.O.P.A.) to support their computer literacy education program, which teaches local adults basic computer skills for better access to higher-paying jobs. The grant also helps with some of their operational costs, including rent and maintenance of their classroom in the community education center.
- A grant was made to Puerto Aventuras and Akumal Educators (P.A.A.E.) to support their children's English program, which serves 50 local children, as well as to help with some of their operational costs, including rent and maintenance of their classroom in the community education center.
- A grant was made to Patas, the animal welfare organization, to purchase medications and supplies for their clinic in the Poblado that has served the community's furry friends for many years.
More information on each of these programs will be available on the Anat Kah Web site in the near future.
The grants program fulfills our mission to promote the development of a sustainable civil society in the Mayan Riviera. Our next round of grants will be made in late 2010, at which time we plan to open our call for applications for funds to organizations from around the region who are interested in bringing their projects and services to Puerto Aventuras, offering convenient, local access to educational, healthcare and other community programs that currently operate in nearby towns.
