Balamku Inn

balamku5.jpg
Balamku Inn has been built to address the issues of sewage treatment and water pollutants as well as other green practices. We find our guests are becoming more and more interested in the “green” systems here and are selecting hotels that truly reflect responsible practices. The information below, outlines our Ecological systems. We are pleased to offer brief tours to guests and interested travelers.

Balamku is committed to providing comfort and quality services using the resources of nature without abusing the environment. We believe that we have an obligation to protect the environment and reduce the impact of tourism by using eco-efficient energy, water systems, and waste management practices to preserve the fragile environment of a coastal resort.

ENERGY

All of our energy is provided by solar panels and wind generation which supplies our guests (10 rooms) with 24 hour AC electricity with no restrictions on consumption except common sense. In case mother nature fails, we have a quiet, propane (clean) backup generator which is rarely needed.

WATER MANAGEMENT

All the grey water from the showers and sinks supports constructed wetlands, providing controlled nutrients to a variety of plants. Guests are encouraged to use the biodegradable soap and shampoo provided in the bathrooms. The toilets are low-flush reducing water usage. Our rain collection system, on average, satisfies all our water needs 6 months of the year.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

In this area of Mexico, there is a water table just feet beneath the surface. We believe septic systems are a hazard to this environment. Properly installed septic tanks require a leach field which is impossible on the beach. Otherwise, they should be treated purely as holding tanks and pumped out regularly which rarely happens. Instead, we have installed composting units at the back of each unit to manage the black water and solid waste from the toilets. The solid waste is eventually used as fertilizer and the liquid waste is used for plants. This system was adapted by a biologist, Dinah Drago, from Puerto Morelos who recognized, as a diver, the sad reality of waste leaking into the sea and destroying the coral reef. This system is approximately 60 years old and has been promoted worldwide by The RILES Foundation.

RECYCLING

All bottles, cans and plastics are separated from other waste to assist in recycling. Sadly, there is no recycling at this time in Mahahual. Organics from food preparation are composted in bins and then used in our gardens. Water is available for refilling bottles to reduce the need for a new plastic bottle every day. Only new clients receive a new, unopened bottle. Towels and linens are changed every 2 – 3 days to reduce the water consumption and by using coloured towels, we eliminate the need for Clorox in our laundry.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

The planning design of Balamku considered the protection of the many local species of trees and plants. The units are situated to maximize natural ventilation. Vines and shrubs have intentionally been left to assist in reduction of soil erosion as well as for the enjoyment of their natural beauty. We are continuously planting local trees and shrubs.

We are regularly invited to be part of a growing number of Green web sites that encourage travelers to make responsible choices for their accommodations. Please let us know if you would like more information. Carol Tumber and Alan Knight Balamku Inn
