Blue Parrot 5th Avenue Review September 2009

Playa Del Carmen is one of my favorite cities; but it hasn't always been. At first the growth rate was so rapid that it seemed to be a city in search of its personality. That has changed for me over the years as it has grown and developed into an international city with a very unique personality. PDC is located on the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, with its white sandy beaches that glisten in the sun light. The roads lead to or from the beach and are home to rare finds and hidden treasures for everyone.

But what I love most about Playa is 5th Avenue. A pedestrian street full of shops and restaurants. At night it comes to life with colors and sounds and people galore. It epitomizes Mexico Caribbean with the sounds of dance music and laughter everywhere and the warmth of the tropics bringing it all to a sizzle.

When I had a chance to stay at Blue Parrot on 5th Avenue I couldn't have been more delighted. And when I walked into my room I was so pleasantly surprised, it was even more delicious than I had expected. The décor is Asian, which may seem strange in a Caribbean setting but it works. It makes the room feel so cool, cozy and comfortable. The beds are comfy and linens are nice and soft. The shower was one of my favorites. It has a curved wall so you don't need a door which makes it, for some reason I can't explain, more inviting. The toiletries were wonderful. It's always so nice when they are a touch above. The room was also surprisingly quiet. Here you are in the heart of 5th Avenue and once you close the door and draw your curtains, you are a million miles away in a peaceful haven.

If 5th Avenue is not your cup of tea as a vacation spot, don't dismiss Blue Parrot because they also have 2 other properties within walking distance - one right on the beach where the beach bar and restaurant is located, and the other property Blue Parrot Suites has a very lovely pool. I hope to have the opportunity to check out both of those accommodations in the future.

The only thing to be aware of is if you rent a car there is only street parking, which is very limited especially during busier times. But for most people vacationing in Playa Del Carmen there is little need for a car rental. The public transportation is wonderful with cabs, colectivos and buses readily available. And with the pool, beach and 5th Avenue right there who could ask for more?

The staff was friendly and helpful; the guard even helped me to find a place to park my car and told me what time to be sure and move it. Another reason to choose Blue Parrot is that they are a supporter of the local animal rescue groups, Coco's Cat Rescue and Peanut Pet Shelter. And they have added a number of eco-friendly touches such as sensor lights in their bathrooms.
