Gearing Up for the Library's
Summer School Program
2010

Update from Hekab Be Library
June 2010

MEET LISET
Seven-year-old Liset showed up at the library a few months ago without a word of Spanish. Fortunately, our multilingual Assistant Director, Carlos, speaks Mayan (in addition to Spanish and English). He discovered that Liset had just moved to Akumal from a small town where everyone speaks Mayan and her school was also taught in Mayan. Living in Akumal, she had no one to turn to for help with her school work, since her dad works all day and her mom cannot read. Luckily she found her way to Hekab Be. At the library, Liset has been able to make friends and learn Spanish in an environment where there is support in her native language, and to get help with her school work. The changes have been dramatic and so incredibly positive for Liset. We're all are so proud of her!

Hekab Be helps open roads for the children and families who most need it. Now Liset and other children in Akumal need your help so they can attend the library's summer school.

Summer Course 2010

Can you contribute $30 US to support one child for Hekab Be's enrichment summer school? Our summer program runs for four weeks between July and August, for children ages 4 to 15. Many children in Akumal have learned to read during the library's summer program!

The theme for our 2010 Summer School is Health & Well-Being. MondayFriday the kids will participate in the following activities:

  • 4560 minutes of recreational/sports activities
  • Daily story time
  • Academic instruction in literacy development, with content in areas related to health such as nutrition, the human body and health in the environment
  • An arts & crafts activity or science experiment related to the day's activities, according to the children's ages
  • Free play time at the library (on the jungle gym, puzzles, coloring, etc.)

University of Michigan Student Interns at Hekab Be
We are extremely pleased to be hosting a summer intern, Carrie, who is studying for a joint Master's degree in Public Health and Social Work at the University of Michigan. Carrie will be providing a recreational component, as well as content in the area of health education, to our already robust summer program. She is originally from Phoenix, Arizona and still calls it home. Over the years, she has worked in recreation with children and adults as well as with the Head Start program. In the future, she is interested in working to improve health literacy and advocacy for immigrants within medical systems in the United States and possibly on a global level. ˇBienvenida, Carrie!
