Online ticket sales will conclude at Noon (PST) on April 24, 2010. A winning ticket will be selected in a drawing at 7 p.m. (CST) on April 24, 2010, LIVE ON THE AKUMAL WEBCAM!!
For those who will be in the area, you can attend the Adult Spring Break LocoGringo party during Happy Hour on the 24th at the Moonrise Bar (open to the public) at the Akumal Beach Resort. Tickets will be available for purchase from Liza Rodgers at the party prior to the drawing.
The library is entirely supported by donations, and all of our programs are offered to local children at no cost. Our monthly expenses are minimal, but we must raise funds to cover our operating expenses which include staff salaries and utility bills.
Long-Time Volunteers Give Art Classes at Hekab Be For over five years, Nancy Welch, an art teacher from Iowa, and her daughter, Heather, have been giving art classes to the kids at HB every March. Here we'd like to take the opportunity to thank them for their time, thoughtfulness and giving. Each year Nancy plans various art activities to do at the library, and brings all the supplies with her in their luggage.
Because she is an art teacher, Nancy is able to offer a variety of activities to the kids, teaching them about basic art principles such as color, form, hue, and, most of all, how fun it is to engage in art! This year they did three projects with the children: a still-life portrait of fruit, using tissue paper and glue; a self-portrait the kids did of themselves using small mirrors; and a project using clay, in which the kids made sea creatures.
The library strives to offer the opportunity for visitors to conduct programs such as these because there are few other venues for visitors to engage with local families. Also, local schools are not able to offer art instruction on a regular basis, so Hekab Be is thrilled to help fill this gap and give local kids the exposure to a variety of instruction beyond the basic skills they learn in school.
Interested in Volunteering at Hekab Be? E-mail us, or stop by and talk to our staff members, Carlos or Leo.
