Kids at HB Make Art for LocoGringo Fundraiser Once again the LocoGringo Forum members have come through for Hekab Be! On May 2, they held an auction to benefit the library at the Akumal Beach Resort Moonrise Bar. Much planning and effort went into this event which took place during the annual "Akumal Adult Spring Break" at ABR. LG regulars offered up many items for auction, and even if they couldn’t be there themselves, many sent auction items to be brought down by others.
We also had the wonderful idea to include some art made by the children at the library for the auction. These items were extremely popular in the bidding wars and you can see why in the photos of the child artists with their artwork! Art from the children included: 2 drawings and painting, beaded bracelets, 2 paper mache turtles, a homemade picture frame, and the most coveted items were 2 plaster masks that looked like archaeological remnants which the children made together. All told, there were nearly 50 items up for bid, so there was something for everyone! Around 50 LocoGringo members took part in the auction, with another 20 or so people who heard about the event and came to bid. And what a group; they raised over a thousand dollars for the library, enough to cover a month and a half of salaries and expenses! Gracias, Thank You, Yum Botik! We can’t say it enough times.
HB Helps Out With Celebration for Mothers and Children in Akumal The mayor of Akumal got in touch with library staff to ask if HB could help sponsor a celebration in the pueblo for both Children's Day and Mother's Day. We, of course, said yes The library will be donating some of the toys and clothes that our wonderful supporters have brought to the library. This is just one of the many ways that HB supports the community, and helps share the generosity of our donors with all of Akumal's residents.
Still Seeking Library Angels … Last month we announced the beginning of our "Library Angels" program. This program has been created to encourage folks to become monthly sponsors of the library. The amount given each month is entirely up to the sponsor and can be automatically deducted from the sponsor's bank account with Bill Pay or through the library's blog Paypal account.
The rationale for this program is to raise a stable monthly income for library operations. We are working hard to plan for the future of Hekab Be and this program is one of the steps we are taking to ensure that the library will be in Akumal, for all of the children who want to attend, for many years to come. Each quarter we will send out library updates directly to all of the Library Angels so that they can be kept up to date on the activities and goings-on at the library. As a bonus, we have a matching grant challenge for up to $2,000 US for Library Angel sponsors. To date, only 6 people have taken us up on this challenge; we hope there are some more angels still waiting in the wings who'd like to help out! To become an angel, visit our blog and click on the subscribe button to sign up. The monthly donation amount is solely up to the sponsor; there is no minimum nor maximum amount required to participate.
