Update from Hekab Be Library
October 2010

Starting School on a Healthy Note

Hekab Be staff are starting the new school year cycle with great enthusiasm, providing afternoon homework and research help to school age kids, the majority of which is focused on health, due to a new program being implemented in the public schools to educate children about eating healthy in order to prevent childhood obesity and diabetes. This provides a nice follow-up to Hekab Be's "Win Health" summer program theme, which also focused on teaching kids about nutrition, about how the body works, and included a daily recreational activity.

The library kids have a leg up in this new school program being implemented in preschool through middle school, thanks to their participation in our summer program. Having already learned a lot of the basics about nutrition and eating well, the kids who spent part of their summer at the library are able to make even more out of what they are learning in school, which is exactly what we would hope the library could do—make a difference in children's overall education!

Our current after-school programming focuses on helping kids learn to read and write. For 5th and 6th graders, we've been helping them with their long division skills. We are very pleased that the same kids are coming every day to practice and improve their math skills, and are making sure they don't lose interest in reading either. But that's not too hard, given all the wonderful new books we have received in recent times. Thanks to all who have made the effort to help keep our library collection current and interesting!

Hekab Be Helps!
Hekab Be helps other learning institutions whenever we can, including the students and schools in Akumal, but not limited just to them. This fall we were able to make a donation of school supplies, books and other learning materials to the kindergarten school in Cobá which did not have sufficient supplies to start the school year. The Akumal library kids got to go to Cobá and help distribute the supplies; they were thrilled that they could help others too!

We also were able to donate learning materials to the pre-kindergarten school in Chumpón. Even though the kids from Akumal weren't able to go along and make the donation in person, we were still happy to be able to help other children in need. Thanks again to all the library supporters who've filled their suitcases and shopping carts with pencils, pens, crayons, paper and all the rest. We want you to know just how far your generosity is being spread around in Quintana Roo!

Run Against Cancer
In October, Hekab Be will be sponsoring a "Run Against Cancer" here in Akumal, in honor of October being breast cancer awareness month. The race will be from Akumal Pueblo to Yal Ku Lagoon and back. Part of the race proceeds will go to a local organization that helps provide support to cancer patients. If you are part of such an organization, or know of one in the local area that does good work, please let us know. We want to ensure that the funds go to the right place! If anyone is interested in donating prizes for the race, please let us know ASAP!

As part of our cancer awareness efforts, a portion of the proceeds from our most recent clothing bazaar fundraiser, held on October 2, is being donated to Lupita, a local area cancer patient who is about to undergo surgery for her disease.
