New Akumal Library Logo Featuring Art by Local Children

During the month of March, staff and volunteers have been concentrating heavily on the Arts. The contest to help create a new logo for our US non-profit organization was a huge success, with over 25 participants and 4 overall winners (First and second place winners from older and younger age groups). For more photos see our blog.

Other arts projects have included animal paper projects, greeting cards, and painting and learning the artist's palette. The art projects were in compliment to our normal after-school activities. These activities include assigned work, chalk board competitive competitions, homework assistance and increasingly (this is an area we really need volunteer help!) helping improve the reading ability of some of our newer readers.

We have had so much activity at the library in the past couple of weeks and anticipate more during Semana Santa (Easter break). We continue to visit local schools twice a week (kindergarten and elementary schools) for story time. If we don’t come, the children are not read to on a regular basis. Dinosaur stories seem to be a huge hit right now!

A proud logo contest winner
March was a month of many volunteers! The month of March was an exceptional one in terms of outside help, which is so for us at Hekab Be. We have a longer list than usual of people to thank for giving their time: A heartfelt thank you to our incredible Intern Yilin Zhang; to Carol Current, visiting from North Dakota who helped watch over the library while staff carried out their public school program; to Paul and Babs Ratliff for installing our new lighting system in the English Annex; to Nancy and Heather Welch for once again providing the children with expert art instruction. CEA volunteers and library helpers Anne Burrows and Kati - for giving English classes twice a week; to Alice and Bud Blatner for teaching Mathematics every Saturday for the past 4 months- we have all witnessed the results these classes have had on the students; to Bruce and Debby Oakley –for too many things to list here!

Please consider volunteering with the library! Volunteering does not have to be a long term - or short term commitment. Consider going with us to the schools on Mondays and Wednesdays. Volunteer an afternoon once or twice a week and work with emerging readers.... help garden! If you’re interested in volunteering please contact Maggie at: Maggiemk@aol.com

If you have other questions, please contact us at: akumallibrary@gmail.com.

We are grateful to all our volunteers-- who help keep our programs lively and varied-- and to all our loyal supporters--we would not be here without you!
