Carlos, my friend and silly guy beloved by Akumal children, has decided to move on after 8 years of dedicated service to the library. I'll miss him, and I know that many of you will miss him as well. Carlos was not just an employee, but part of the heart and soul of the library community. Before the library had the beautiful swing and slide set, Carlos put together the rickety toddler swing set a zillion times as it broke and flew away in hurricanes. He and Maggie worked diligently to fix up the library and toiled through muck after several hurricanes.
And I can't really tell you how many times I thought the library would close due to lack of funds, or various disasters both caused by nature and humans. But Carlos kept going despite all of these obstacles, even occasionally without a paycheck. Hmm, I also remember Carlos as a very young man, flirting with the CEA interns who came down for the summer, (he was a very popular Mayan man!!!), and then through a few more serious romances as he has matured. Now it is time to move on to other challenges, and I wish him well in all his new endeavors! Perhaps you have a memory or two to share about Carlos or the library "in the old days."
Maggie remains devoted to the library, and we have new helpers too. Nobody can replace Carlos, with his knowledge of Spanish, English, Maya and a bit of Italian, plus his zany sense of humor and patience with the kids.
But life goes on, and Maggie and the new helpers will continue on to help the adults and children of Akumal know that reading and learning can be fun
