We are thrilled to announce that we have received sponsorship for all of our children for this year’s Summer School Courses. Sincere thanks to all who donated to this important cause – your generosity will make it possible for these children to attend Summer Classes for free and without strain on their families budgets. In the past, the Summer School session was free, but increased costs and a significant drop in our tourism base means our already meager budget needed serious assistance.
Hekab Be has had a reading (and material assistance) program with the Pre-Kinder, Kindergarten and Primary Schools for over 3 years. Many tourists have joined us in our work with these schools and have commented on how much these trips add to their appreciation of our community and the area.
Last Friday, the Kindergarten made a field trip to the library to introduce these little people to the wonderful world of books. They were taken on a tour of our campus, showed how to use dictionaries, encyclopedias and atlas’, they were read several books, they sang some songs and then enjoyed coloring. Many of these children will be participating in our youngest group (4-7 year olds) for Summer School and are very excited about getting to be at the same “school” as the older children and teens. There are separate classrooms for the 3 groups but they all take recess at the same time. Our teaching staff this Summer will include our permanent staff – with 3 lead Teachers aided by 3 Teacher Assistants and the theater component of Summer School will be lead by Rey and Kiome Ortega.
Visitors are encouraged to come by and visit during Summer School and are also welcome to check out materials from our extensive selection of books, dvd’s, vhs, board games and puzzles. Please note that we will be on a shorter schedule during Summer School – which runs Monday, July 13 thru Friday August 7th. Hours then will be from 9:00 to 1:00 Mon. – Sat. closed most afternoons – but there will be some Adult(Teen)- Ed classes taking place on some afternoons. Instructions will be posted for returns and donation drop-offs when the library is closed.
The culmination of the Summer Program will be our Second Annual Circus! The date- Friday, August 7th – the time 5:30 p.m. at CEA center or the Stage (weather depending).
Please come and visit us and enjoy the performance if you are visiting Akumal, or the area at the time!
