Reduced library schedule to prevent potential spread of swine flu

Until further notice the library will only be open in the mornings from 9-11 (to receive donations) to help prevent any spread of germs related to the swine flu. There have been NO reported cases of swine flu to date. However the Mexican Secretary of Health has mandated that ALL schools in the country be closed until May 6th. We are following their example since it is the responsible thing to do, for the health of our staff, local children and visitors alike.

Cancellations:
Until further notice we will not be providing any of our regular services, except for book loans. After school and Saturday morning programming is suspended, as are language classes.

Unfortunately this means that we will also not be holding our Dia del Niño activities on April 30th as planned, these will have to take place after we resume our normal schedule. We had also planned a clothing bazaar for May 2nd that will be rescheduled as well.

Please be safe everyone (no matter where you are) and remember to wash your hands thoroughly and often!!

Early in April, the library miserably experienced post-hurricane like conditions when an electrical surge destroyed our breakers/meter box causing a complete loss of electricity in both buildings. This was during the two week Easter Break vacation when lots of kids were coming in looking for some fun. Of course, it was also during a particularly hot, rainless spell. Plans for Easter week fun activities (movie/popcorn), computer games….. were scrapped and we instead worked outside where there was some breeze. Alcoholic Anonymous meetings continued without electricity, holding their meetings by candlelight. Now that the electricity has been restored. and we are all appreciative, once again, of how much we rely on it!

Of course, we had to have some electrical work done to get everything back in order after this power surge—an unanticipated expense. This experience stood as a great reminder of how much we depend upon material and monetary donations to help cover not only our educational needs and overhead expenses but also in the case of emergencies! We know the economy is on everyone’s minds, and we appreciate even more those who are able to help us out with any donations, be they in kind, or in cash. But we also need to remind people that if you are thinking of buying something to donate to the library, consider instead donating directly the money you would otherwise spend. Without an inflow of monetary donations we cannot pay our staff or bills!

For information on how to make a cash donation, visit our donation site.

For information on our most recent needs, check out our wishlist.

If you’re in the area please drop by and visit us! You many check out books (for adults and kids), DVDs/VHS, board games, and jigsaw puzzles. Visiting children are welcome to participate in our after-school and Saturday morning programming.

AA meetings at the held at the library Monday–Saturday at 8:30 p.m. – and is one of the few AA groups in the region that is bilingual (except on Wednesday). We are proud to host this group dedicated to improving their own lives!
