HB Donates Books to Area Schools and Libraries
About once a year, HB staff go through our book collection and take out any titles of which we have multiple copies to distribute to other area schools and libraries. Most libraries and schools in the region have very limited book collections, so they look forward to these donations and are thrilled to be able to expand their book offerings to their patrons and students.

Various friends help us to distribute the books, and over the years we've been able to build friendships with other libraries in the region. This way, all the wonderful book donations we receive here in Akumal are spread throughout the area to towns and schools where they are badly needed! In the past two months, HB staff and friends have donated books to the following places: Akumal public kindergarten, Akumal Montessori, Tulúm library, Cobá library, and the primary schools in Macario Gómez and Francisco Uh May.

This is all made possible only because of all our wonderful supporters who over the years have filled their suitcases with books to bring to the children here. We are especially grateful to Books for a Better World, which has been donating books to us (through Alice Gartell AKA Alice in AZ) for a number of years!

Salsa Lessons at the Library
If you're passing by HB on a Thursday evening, don't be surprised to hear the sounds of salsa music! No, there's not an after-hours party going on. It's our weekly salsa lessons, held every Thursday at 6 PM, which we have added as part of our continuing effort to expand services for adults in the community.

Expert salsa dancers Javier Garcia, who works at Villas Flamingo, and Fausto Pacheco, who works at Club Akumal Caribe, come to teach the class in exchange for a small donation from students. So far, there are about eight students coming on a regular basis. If you're in town and want to check it out, feel free to come on by. Men especially are needed for dancing partners!

In coming months we also hope to start offering a zumba class. If you are a zumba instructor or have a zumba DVD that you'd be willing to share with us, that would help us be able to train a local instructor, so please let us know.

Upcoming Events
English Paperback Book Sale on President's Day Weekend
On Saturday, February 19 , from 9 AM–1 PM, the library will be holding a book sale of extra copies of titles from our English paperback collection. Art Auction on March 11 at Lol-Ha Beach Bar to Benefit HB
We will be holding a silent art auction fundraiser at the Beach Bar on Friday, March 11 during Happy Hour. The auction will feature paintings donated by the Chicago-based painter Oscar Romero, a returning Akumal visitor whose work can be seen on the Villas Maya reception building.
Check back on the library blog later this month for further details and a sneak peek at the paintings that will be auctioned!
