Welcome to the monthly newsletter from Sac-Be.com, your
source for news, maps and travel information for the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya. If you
have a news item, an event you'd like to promote, an article of interest or a comment to make,
please e-mail us at info@sac-be.com. Enjoy!
Happy Mother's Day! And did you know that this year it shares the date with World Migratory Bird Day? It is also officially
Turtle Season. As always, we encourage everyone to do your part to help
protect and preserve these wonderful animals and their environment.
And speaking of turtle and migratory birds, we all know that there is one of the worst oil spills in history happening along the U.S. Gulf Coast. These links will take you to just some of the organizations that are helping: how to help
and get involved.
Sac-Be.com, as you know, is located in the U.S. and the founders of the
original Sac-Be Newspaper, Dani Knod and Scott Brown, have moved in other directions. Scott Brown and Marieke White were due May 2nd to become first-time parents to a bouncing baby boy. They are currently in Scotland for the birth. We were hoping he would make our deadline. Dani Knod and
Jamie Cost are also about to become the proud new parents of their second child. Dani is due the end of this month and is currently in Chicago.
We wish them all the best!
With so much happening in their lives, we found we had a void that needed to be filled, so Sac-Be.com is delighted to welcome Tami Taylor, as the local Riviera Maya member of our team. Tami will handle sales and also report on news and events in the area. Welcome Tami!
NEWS FLASH! - Marieke gave birth Tuesday, May 4, to a baby boy! We now can say that we have before and after photos. Congratulations, Scott and Marieke!!

green glass bead from the shipwreck set in the center of the cross. The cross can be bought by e-mailing
camilleka@hotmail.com, or in Akumal at the jewelry counter in Super Chomak. Also, from November–April,
the cross will be sold at Ak-Nah Galería in Akumal.

Walking in the Footsteps of Michel Peissel: Part 2 – by
Mari Pintkowski – The lure of the Caribbean coast and small rural Mexican pueblos was becoming part of a dream that Wendy Morrill could not
let go of. In 2005 and 2006, she and her 65-year-old father began taking extended "beach hikes" that included the coastal area from Puerto Morelos
to Playa del Carmen that would eventually develop into a dream of following in the footsteps of Michel Peissel. |

Eva Estes - "My love for the Yucatán began over 28 years ago, when our family invested in
Kailuum, a luxury camping resort, near Playa Del Carmen. There were countless vacations with the whole family and, during these trips, my heart
and soul surrendered completely to this magical, spellbinding part of Mexico. Each vacation created a meltdown at the end, since I never wanted
to leave."

Hekab Be Biblioteca – Despite devastating hurricanes, frustrating Mexican bureaucracy, and other
challenges, Hekab Be Biblioteca now has thousands of books for both children and adults, in Spanish and in English. Many children graduate from
ninth grade, and a few go on to finish high school in Tulúm or Playa del Carmen. Tourists use the library to borrow books for the beach, learn more
about the region and interact with the local people. Children from the village visit daily for after-school classes, tutoring, and lots of fun
and educational activities. Be sure to visit Hekab's blog.
Children’s Day Outing – by Eleanor Zucker -
In Mexico, not only are mothers and fathers honored with their own day, but children are too. El Día del Niño is celebrated on April 30.

PET OF THE MONTH |
 |
|
This month's cat was submitted by Coco's Cat Rescue - Pacino. This little kitten was found by a woman who runs a restaurant in Playa. She found the
injured kitten and tried to help by taking him to the vet. The vet was closed for lunch and she tied the cat up in a plastic bag and left him
outside. Fortunately she called Coco's Cat rescue and explained what she had done. Luckily the kitten survived being in the plastic bag and was
treated for his wounds which were either caused by a burn or by being inside a car motor. He is now safely undergoing treatment. Pacino is shy at first
but once he gets to know you, he loves having his tummy rubbed and is playful. He is 4 months old and has been neutered.
But it's hard to pick just one! Here are all the ones available at Akumal
Animal Rescue Fund and here are the ones from Peanut Pet
Shelter in Playa del Carmen.

UPDATES ON CAUSES |

Message from Lucy - Hello friends and family around the world, and all of you who know and love Akumal and the Riviera Maya! I'm Lucy from Akumal,
and I'd be grateful if you could spend a few minutes looking at my Web site.
Centro Ecológico Akumal Director Paul Sánchez-Navarro did a
wonderful interview which we wanted to share with all of you. Read it on
matadorchange.com.
Coco's Cat Rescue is full to the brim and in dire need
of people who can foster. Please contact them if you can help. Fantastic news: Coco's Cat Rescue raised enough money to hire a part-time vet. Edgar
will be working six days a week from 10AM–2PM at Medivet for Coco's Cat Rescue. His day off will be Monday. They will also be accepting dogs for 300
pesos (to cover costs of medicines) so that Coco's donations continue to go to their original cat mission.

VIDAS announced that there are only 10 weeks until their Playa del Carmen clinic! Help them
have their biggest, most successful clinic yet! Visit their site and donate today!
Well, folks, it's official! The Peanut Pet Shelter has won in the International Division of the Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge. Grand total winnings were $2,000! A HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for them. But you can still help out by buying a brick for their new clinic. Check out their Web site to learn more. BUT HURRY ... buying a brick now enters you into the contest to win a trip for 2 to Playa del Carmen; the drawing will be May 7.
Finally, a famous quote well worth revisiting was posted on Ocean
Conservancy’s Facebook page. Margaret Mead once wrote, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed,
it is the only thing that ever has." Let these words inspire all of us to try to change the world!!
