Puerto Aventuras Guarderia-Ludoteca
We are pleased to announce that the Puerto Aventuras Guarderia-Ludoteca (Childcare Center) is up and running, and now, thanks to the support of many community members and visitors, the center is well protected by hurricane shutters, installed by Puerto Aventuras poblado resident Sr. Eugenio Ramos Suchite, and will serve as a community shelter in case of a hurricane. Thank you to all who attended the gala dinner in March, and who purchased the wonderful denim bags, the proceeds of which all went towards the installation of the shutters. The shutters will be an invaluable asset to the community in the event of a hurricane (although we hope they don’t have to be used!).
La Casa del Pueblo
Those of you who are familiar with the poblado in Puerto Aventuras may have noticed construction taking place between the delegación/police station and the Transformar Educando building (“Educentro”). This project, initiated by outgoing delegada, Doris Jimenez, is the first phase of what will be a community center that will host various projects, workshops, classes and other community service-oriented activities. This center is much needed, as the town has extremely limited community space. Approximately $7,000 USD has been donated or pledged from within the community to support the construction of this center; if you are interested in learning more and/or in supporting the construction project, please feel free to email christina@fcrivieramaya.org
Colegio Puerto Aventuras Book Campaign
Two years ago, Colegio Puerto Aventuras, the independent, bilingual school in Puerto, began a campaign to promote reading and create lifelong readers in their students, and they are now beginning to see the results; it isn’t unusual to find students in the school library during recess reading for pleasure, or stopping by the office inquiring about their Scholastic book order delivery.
The school library, open to both the school and the general community, is a great source of books, but there is a need to expand the collection to include new novels and reading material for students and the community at large.
With the help of friends in schools across Canada and the U.S., the school has compiled enticing book lists for readers of all ages. These “wish lists” have been registered with amazon.com and the school now hopes that friends around the world will support their reading program and library by donating books off of these lists to the school. The books need not be new; many used books are listed. You can have the books sent directly to the school or, if you plan on visiting the area soon, you can bring the books with you. Another option is to purchase an amazon.com gift certificate redeemable by the school (instructions available on the amazon.com website) and the school will place the order.
