Starting July 14, Hekab Be Library will begin its summer program for local children ages 5 and up.
We anticipate having as many as 70 children in three age groups: 5-7 year olds (beginning readers); 8-11 year olds (intermediate readers); and ages 12 and up (advanced readers).
Hekab Be staff will be teaching the kids everyday, from 9-1, for four weeks. In past years we have always offered this service to Akumal's children completely free of charge. In order to keep this program going without charging the families who need the service, we are asking library friends to help sponsor our efforts.
Contributing to our summer program is a very worthwhile investment. Summer is a time when children tend to lose ground in their schooling because they fall out of practice in academic skills and get off track. We have found that the summer program not only helps keep kids on track, but it has consistently been an opportunity for Akumal’s kids to make great leaps forward in their reading skills. This is due to the intensive and individualized instruction they receive in the library’s summer course.
Summer school activities
Besides working on reading skills and comprehension, other planned activities for this year's summer school will include:-
A circus put on by the children on Akumal's stage. The musician, Ray Ortega, who participated in last year’s summer course will be returning help put this circus together and he will be giving music instruction to the kids.
-
A reading competition with prizes for each age group for the child who reads the most books during the summer program.
Musician, Ray Ortega, gives a drumming presentation during the 2007 summer course. His participation was such a huge success, he has agreed to come back this year and work with the kids more intensively. He will be teaching them music and helping to organize a 'children's circus'.

The summer program curriculum emphasizes reading but includes other activities, such as arts & crafts, as these kids from the 2007 program are involved in.

We also have a summer program wishlist which you can see on our wishlist blog.
