Underseascape Manatees

One of the things I love about diving is you never know what can happen on any dive. In over 20 years of diving I have still just barely scratched the surface of what’s out there.

A few years ago I was out exploring a new area to see if it was worth taking people to. I had taken my camera along just for fun, hoping to get a few shots. Looking out ahead of me I spotted a small Lesser Electric Ray lying in the sand. Settling down in the sand next to him I took a few shots.

Out of the corner of my eye I caught some movement and when I looked up lo and behold a manatee was swimming by!

I fired off a shot at him expecting him to take off when he saw me. Instead he turned, swam down and landed in the sand right in front of me!

He just laid there looking at me like he was trying to figure out what this strange creature was in front of him. After a few minutes he just turned and slowly swam away.

Incredible encounters like this are what keep me coming back to the Sea. You never do know what will happen next. Steve For more pictures and books go to
