If would like to visit HB during the holidays, please check our blog first for information on holiday closures.
Second Annual Race Against Cancer Held on November 13 It was a small, but enthusiastic, turnout for our second cancer race, early on a Sunday morning. This year the race was on bicycles, an off-road race on the trail behind Akumal Pueblo. A great and informative talk was given by the local Doctora Daniela Villagran from Farmacia de La Riviera here in Akumal. Every two hours a woman dies of breast cancer in Mexico. Breast cancer and cervical cancer are being diagnosed among younger women in Mexico all the time. She had some other wonderful facts and helped dispel some common myths about the causes of cancer.
Then the racers lined up and took off into the jungle! The winner finished the 12 km race in about 38 minutes. A woman, Mirna Pacho, was the OVERALL winner, showing us just how strong women are!
Many thanks to all who participated and supported this event, especially our prize sponsors: Lol-Ha, Tequilaville & La Cueva del Pescador Restaurants, Mexico Maya Artesanias & Xel-Ha.
We hope to have a larger turnout again next year!
Weekly Art Classes by Visiting Argentinian Artist About a month ago, Silvina Brude, from Argentina, contacted the library to see if we were interested in having her come do some art projects with the kids. Since then, she has been coming every Friday and giving the classes on a volunteer basis. Silvina is an artist in her own right, and it shows in the wonderful projects she has done with the children so far: self-portraits, landscapes, dreamcatchers and mandalas. Silvina and the kids are now working on some special art projects for the holidays. They will be making custom ornaments to decorate the tree for HB, and gifts they can give to family or friends.
