Library Challenge Grant Completed!

In a record amount of time, the library was able to meet a challenge grant of $2,250 U.S. put on by loyal library friends. Each donation made to the library during the challenge period was met dollar for dollar by the challengers, long-time library supporters Debby and Bruce Oakley. Our gratitude to the Oakleys and all the other donors who helped make this fund raiser a great success!

We are humbled and amazed that so many library supporters have donated money to help the library during such difficult economic times. Social networking clearly has its benefits, as many of our challenge grant donors came to us through our Facebook page. Are you on Facebook? Join our cause: Hekab Be Biblioteca

Special Thanks to Akumal Villas
Akumal Villas has stepped up to help Hekab Be by donating funds to pay for Internet service for an entire year! The library previously had Internet service, but when our phone line went down in Hurricane Wilma and then went without repair for months afterwards, we never re-established the service.

Being able to provide Internet service free of charge to the local population is an invaluable gift, and we are thrilled to be coming back online. We are thrilled too that a local business has come forward to help the library, which in turn helps support and educate their employees and their families.

INSTITUTO CUMBRES CANCUN Visit to Hekab Be
Story and photos by Sandra Jimenez, who teaches English classes at the library on Saturdays

It was a wonderful, sunny Saturday morning when 5th graders from INSTITUTO CUMBRES CANCUN School, led by Miss Elizabeth, gathered at 7:00AM in order to visit Hekab Be. All the children were very excited. They had collected clothes, toys, and useful things for the people in Akumal, especially for the children and families who regularly attend the library. They arrived at 9:30 AM and by then all the children were expecting them with a bit of curiosity and a lot of excitement! It took them all just a few minutes to feel integrated.

Leo, the library's director, welcomed the students from INSTITUTO CUMBRES, and gave them a tour through the facilities. Afterwards, the children from Hekab Be (with help from Leo and Carlos), explained all the projects and things they do at the library, and how this has improved their lives; some of the children shared their own experiences.

Then it was lunch time, the children from INSTITUTO CUMBRES had brought lunch to share with their new friends, so they picked out one or two children from Akumal, and sat together to have lunch. As they sat, they talked about their experiences, their habits, the different ways they live, their schools, favorite things, games, etc. It was such a nice environment; they all played together with both groups learning some new games.

Then Sandra, the English teacher, sang with all of them a song that later was translated into Mayan, so everybody was singing the song in English and then in Mayan, having a lot of fun together!

INSTITUTO CUMBRES received a wooden plaque with their name on it and hung it in the appreciation garden, a tradition at Hekab Be for the people who provide community service. They then had pictures taken with their new friends.

It was definitely a great experience for all the people involved.
