Sherry Stevens, Playa del Carmen VIDAS Coordinator
VIDAS de los Estados Unidos. (Based out of Colorado)is dedicated to improving lives of animals and people through veterinary medicine and education.
VIDAS stands for Veterinarios Internationales Dedicados a Animales Sanos.
Since 2002 they have traveled to Quintana Roo providing free veterinary care in an effort to fight pet overpopulation. By working with the local communities they are making a difference that affects animals and humans alike.
The group is made up of Veterinarians, Vet Techs, Vet Students and animal loving volunteers.
This year for the Playa del Carmen Vet Sterilization clinic we will have Surgeons, Vet technicians and a few students (to observe and help out with non-technical needs.) Note that ONLY licensed surgeons will do surgeries! I don’t want anyone to think they come here to practice. They are top notch surgeons who could do 50-70 surgeries a day.
VIDAS' goal is prevention of animal suffering due to starvation, disease and other health problems associated with pet overpopulation in areas of need, recognizing also that overpopulation of animals contributes directly to human disease as well.
VIDAS'focus is safe sterilization, and when funding permits us, vaccination and parasite control for the animals. Education for the people about SAFE animal handling, zoonotic disease and general animal husbandry and health care.
