Looking for that perfect spot to get away? Try Villas Flamingo on Half Moon Bay. (View video.) This private villa boutique hotel is one of the few on the bay with its own pool. Most of the homes on Half Moon Bay are not on the beach and the condos have pools that you are sharing with several units.

Located right in the middle of the bay, it also boasts the easiest access to the water and the largest span of beach. If you need more convincing, ask the turtles; 15 nested in front of Villas Flamingo this last year.

There are so many things that make this place special. One is the the owner, Myrna Bush, who grew up in Akumal.  In fact, her father founded the town. So needless to say, she has a profound love for all that is and was Akumal, and is passionate about preserving it.

The Moorish architecture is gorgeous, with its round, sweeping stairways to the arches, recessed lighting and huge rooms. There are four separate villas. Villa number one is a free-standing unit. Villas 2–4 are connected but totally private and situated in a way you don't have to see your neighbors unless, of course, you want to. This is a perfect spot for small groups and family reunions—able to hold up to 24 comfortably. Villas are as small as 1-bedroom and as large as 3-bedrooms.

Villa #1 is a free-standing, 2-bedroom villa with one guest suite on the bottom floor and the other on the second floor. Both suites are large with enormous bathrooms. The upstairs suite also has its own balcony. while the downstairs master has a private balcony entrance. Downstairs there is a living area and full kitchen and dining area. There is a lovely patio and direct access to the beach and pool. This villa can comfortably sleep up to 4 people.

Villa #2 is a spacious 1-bedroom. The first floor has plenty of room to entertain with a full kitchen, dining area and large living room. The sofas could be used as two twin beds and there is a small full bath downstairs. The master suite is huge with a very large walk-in closet, sitting area, expansive balcony and large master bath. This villa can also sleep 4 people.

Villa #3 is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath. The downstairs is perfect for entertaining with its kitchen area, dining room, living room and large patio. It is tucked back in from the villas on either side, which yields plenty of privacy. Upstairs boasts two large suites with large baths and private balconies. This villa can sleep up to 5 people.

Villa #4 is the largest, with 3 bedrooms. The first floor has a wonderful layout with kitchen, dining, living area, patio and master suite. The second floor has two suites with private baths. One has a king, and the other has double beds and one queen bed, and both have their own balconies. This villa can sleep up to 10 people.

All the upstairs bedrooms in all four villas have amazing views of the pool, beach and beyond from their private balconies. Each villa has a lounge bed for 2-3 people.

Then there is the pool—not just your ordinary cement hole in the ground. This pool is designed to resemble a cenote, with cascading waterfall and amazing tropical landscaping. The waterfall, backed by the ocean, makes for wonderful. relaxing sounds.

Recently remodeled, Villas Flamingo has a touch of elegance with marble countertops in the bathroom and tasteful tropical decor. The kitchens are fully stocked. Each villa has its private patio area with tables and chairs. In addition to comfortable poolside furniture, closer to the beach are these incredible beds to lie in and soak it all in. What we found most inviting was the way the buildings were situated, maximizing your privacy. Without much effort, you really could believe you were alone in a tropical paradise. The landscaping is full of lush, tropical plants.

There are also all the modern conveniences you could hope to find: flat screen TV, air conditioning, microwave, blender and WiFi! All this and the location is perfect. You are right in the middle of Half Moon Bay, with small shops, a convenience store and restaurants close by. You are also half-way between Akumal Beach and Yal-Ku Lagoon. There is convenient parking for guests.

When it comes to sustainability, Villas Flamingo has a constructed wetland, recycling, and they have soap dispensers in the bathroom to save on plastics. They also encourage people to use linens more than once and they use biodegradable detergent. In addition, they work closely with Centro Ecológico Akumal to educate their visitors about protecting the turtles, which, as mentioned earlier, nest in front of Villas Flamingo.
