Xcalak & Mahahual |
At the very southern tip of Quintana Roo’s golden coastline lies the up-and-coming vacation destination of Xcalak and Mahahual. Part of the labeled “Costa Maya,” these sleepy towns are a place to kick your shoes off, flop into a hammock strung between two palms, and lose all sense of time. Known as a diver’s destination, the local diving as well as the snorkeling in the expansive bay is among the best around. While there, ask about a trip to Banco Chinchorro – an atoll about 30 km from shore that is a rare and sought after jewel of sub-aquatic splendor!
Fly-fishing is the other sporting attraction in Xcalak. Impressing fishermen from the largest organizations, the extensive lagoons as well as the Bay of Chetumal are havens for bonefish, permit, snook, and tarpon. However, if all this sounds like too much activity for your vacation agenda, just pick up your book, crawl into your hammock or beach chair, and enjoy the Caribbean breezes.
