Xcalak, the southernmost town in the Costa Maya zone of the Quintana Roo coastline, is quickly becoming a destination for divers internationally. There is amazing shore diving with features such as walls, cavers, tunnels, immense tongue and groove, as well as the famous site, La Poza, a giant trench running parallel to shore where the tarpon gather. If you can make it to La Poza in the summer, you can swim among hundreds and hundreds of 4 to 7 foot tarpon slowly circling and circling around you like a giant tornado. Now, that’s an amazing story for your neighborhood dive shop!
The dive shop in Xcalak, XTC Dive Center, is a wonderful place to help you explore the underwater wonders. The name stands for Xcalak to Chinchorro, which leads to the next reason to go dive Xcalak. XTC has the only boat to date that offers trips out to Chinchorro Banks, an atoll off shore that is the size of Cozumel, but 98% below water! This diver’s dream has only been seen by an handful of lucky people. Be sure to include Xcalak in the plans for your trip to Mexico.
